Question #1: Hi Afya, "I've been trying to drink soy milk rather than regular animal milk. But I have read that soy milk may be damaging to the heart. What do you think? Thanks."
Hey sis, Thanks for your question! There is an ongoing debate on if soy is healthy for you or not. A few things to consider are: 1. Buy organic - non organic soy is usually genetically modified which can cause health problems. 2. Don't overdo it - personally I do not buy soymilk and I rarely drink it. I try to balance out my soy intake with other whole foods. Consuming soy 3-4 times per week is enough. 3. Other milk choices - there are many other choices for you to choose from:
Question #2: "Hi, Ms. Afya! I'm a rookie to vegetarianism. I wanted to know what are the best choices to make as far as buying food from the regular supermarkets...all the health food stores that sell organic goods are located in the mid-town area of my city, far away from me. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your time." Answer: Hey brotha, Thanks for your question! I definitely understand how they make it so hard to eat healthy in this day and age. Luckily, many traditional grocery stores have a natural foods section (Kroger, Publix, even Super Walmart). If you can't find everything you need in that section, then the next best thing is to read labels. if something has a long list of ingredients and you have no idea what the majority of them are, don't buy it. Sticking to simple whole foods like, fruits, vegetables, whole grains (brown rice, whole wheat) and beans is not only healthier for you, it is also cheaper! If you are not able to buy organic produce, get a fruit and veggie wash from the health food store. Hope this helps! - Afya
